how to detect

Academic citation followed by theory paragraph. Ask: if you remove the citation and theory, does the practical observation change? If not, the scaffolding is decorative.

instead

"We added a post-commit hook so we wouldn't forget." If the academic connection is genuinely illuminating, keep it.
