My AI agent wrote production-ready code that would have silently degraded my CV tool from 'impressive LLM analysis' to 'basic keyword matching.' The code was clean. The tests passed. It would have torpedoed every recruiter interaction.

The Fix That Would Have Cost Me the Job

This morning, my CV assessment tool broke. Recruiters paste in job descriptions, an LLM analyzes fit, returns honest evidence-based assessments. It's the centerpiece of my interactive resume.

The error was FUNCTION_INVOCATION_TIMEOUT. Vercel's 15-second limit. Claude was taking 20+ seconds to generate the analysis. Intermittent. Devastating.

I asked my AI agent to fix it.

What it proposed was technically brilliant. Comprehensive error handling. Graceful degradation. Fallback to keyword-based assessment when the LLM times out. Clean code. Good abstractions. The tests would pass.

It would have destroyed the tool's entire value proposition.

The Competent-Sounding Wrong

Here's the code that almost shipped:

The code is clean. The types are correct. The fallback produces valid JSON that the frontend renders perfectly. The user sees something. No error message.

That's the problem.

The Silent Degradation

When the LLM times out, the user would receive a response that looks exactly like a real assessment. Same UI. Same score format. Same evidence structure.

But instead of Claude analyzing the job description against my full CV context—my experience at Brandwatch, my psychology background, my agentic development work—they'd get glorified ctrl+F.

"Keyword 'React' found in job description matches CV skills."

That's not an assessment. That's pattern matching wearing a suit.

The recruiter wouldn't know. The UI wouldn't tell them. They'd see a "strong match" based on nothing but word frequency, make a decision, and move on. Maybe to someone else's CV.

The silent fallback didn't protect the user experience. It sabotaged it while looking helpful.

Why the Agent Thought This Was Right

I said "fix the timeout." The agent heard "make the error go away."

In the agent's world, errors are bad. Errors mean red text in terminals. Errors mean unhappy users. The most helpful response to an error is to catch it, handle it, and return something valid.

This is correct in most contexts. If your image CDN times out, show a placeholder. If your analytics service is slow, continue without it. Graceful degradation is usually the right pattern.

But not always.

Sometimes the LLM is the product. Sometimes falling back to a worse implementation isn't graceful—it's a bait-and-switch. Sometimes the right answer to "the API is slow" is "tell the user the API is slow."

The agent didn't know this because the agent doesn't know what the product means. It knows what the code does.

The Pattern

This is the third time I've caught this pattern in production:

  1. The helpful catch block — Swallowing errors because errors are bad
  2. The reasonable default — Substituting cached/stale/simplified data when fresh data is unavailable
  3. The graceful fallback — Degrading to a worse implementation invisibly

Each time: clean code, correct types, passing tests.

Each time: would have shipped a broken user experience under a working interface.

The Intervention

I typed eleven words: "fallback is a terrible idea. if anthropic times out blame anthropic."

The agent rewrote the fix in 30 seconds:

Now when Claude is slow, the user knows Claude is slow. They can retry. They can try a shorter job description. They can come back later.

They make an informed decision instead of a deceived one.

The Uncomfortable Truth

AI agents are incredibly fast, incredibly capable, and have no concept of product intent.

They optimize for what you ask, not what you mean. "Fix the error" means "remove the red text." "Handle the timeout" means "return valid JSON." The agent will find a solution that satisfies the literal constraint while violating the spirit of what you're building.

And they'll do it with confidence. Clean code. Good variable names. Comprehensive edge case handling. It looks exactly like the right answer.

You have to be the one who knows the difference between "working code" and "correct behavior."

The Gate

I now have a rule: every error-handling change gets a UX review, not just a code review.

Questions I ask:

  • If this path executes, what does the user experience?
  • Would the user want this fallback, or would they prefer to know something failed?
  • Is the fallback degrading quality invisibly?
  • Would I be embarrassed if a user saw the fallback implementation?

If the answer to the last question is yes, the fallback shouldn't be silent.

The Actual Fix

The timeout was caused by Vercel's 15-second limit. The fix was two lines:

And better error messaging when it does timeout.

No silent fallback. No degraded experience wearing a mask. Just: extend the timeout, and be honest when things fail.

The recruiter who pastes a 500-word job description doesn't need keyword matching dressed up as AI analysis. They need the analysis, or they need to know why they're not getting it.


It's funny, until it isn't. The agent's "fix" would have looked perfect in code review. It would have passed every automated check. It would have been merged with confidence.

And somewhere, a recruiter would have made a hiring decision based on ctrl+F results, never knowing the AI had timed out and lied about it.

That's the job that gets away. Not with a bang. With a silent, competent-sounding fallback.
